The main features of Fourth Fragment are:
Random events
The player traverses a randomized world map, tile by tile. Each unexplored tile presents the player with a random event, which generally results in either a choice to be made or combat. Here’s an example of one encounter currently in the game:
Combat
Fights are always played out one on one, and how each character fights is largely based on which skills they have equipped. Each character may have up to 10 different skills active at a time.
Both sides in a fight has their own “turn timer”, which fills up over time and allows the execution of a skill when done - fairly similar to the tried and true active time battle system. The base time for how long this takes is the same for everyone, but is adjusted by stats (as in dexterity) and eventually passive skills.
Here’s the same type of encounter as above, after refusing to pay another bandit’s toll. There are (crude-looking) timers both for the characters’ turns and stamina regeneration:
Skills
Instead of equipment, the player loots actual skills from fallen foes. Outside fights, the player is free to select which 10 skills are currently active. The goal is for the player to find a wide assortment of interesting skills to choose from, and create something similar to the deck-building aspect of collectible card games.
There will also be stats, levelups and a light story.
Oh yeah, and permadeath, of course.
