The Man in the Fields is an ancient ritual that rewards the player with wealth and safety. Once you summon The man in the Fields, every door and item in your house will open on their own. You must close everything again before midnight. Even if the smallest box is left open, he will be able to get in and take away something that's important to you.
If you see a man with ashen skin in your house, try to ignore him. He is not The Man in the Fields, he is a herald. He is making sure you are following the rules of the ritual.
But heed this warning: DO NOT LOOK INTO THE FIELDS!
