Maybe the shield could be a toggle:
when it's on, you are more protected but can't fire weapons, when it's off you are vulnerable but can fire. This could be useful for getting behind front lines; you turn on the shield and speed through defenses, then turn them off and start wreaking havoc with the plasma cannons.

well, in renegade standard multiplayer, eva has blue stars that represent the enemy structures, so maybe you could drive your devil's tounge or whatever upto a blue star and then surface in the enemy base. just an idea
