"Modern games are sooo much better", but they are never good enough. Stardew Valley, Terraria, Assassin's Creed Origins, and so on and on, they are all MODERN games...
I think both are good.
I would say that the biggest issue is finding games that are good now as we are spoilt for choice (there are far more games now than 'back in the days').
Two other problems come into play:
1. General knowledge of the diversity of the Indie Scene is not as big as it should. Most people know of AAA games or cash grab mobile games due to the ludicrous amount spent on ads. If I didn't know of the Indie Scene, I'd easily say that games back in my youth were so much better.
2. Money seems to corrupt even the best (BUT not all). Take Blizzard for example. When they were new they created gems like Warcraft, WOW, Starcraft (not to everyone's liking but no one can argue about their popularity and impact on gamers globally). It was obvious that when they created these games, they were doing it as a passion, as much for themselves as for gamers.
Now, all you need to do is look at Warcraft 3 Reforged and you can see that this is not a passion project, it's a corporate project with 'revenue' in mind as well as 'how to stop things like DOTA slipping through our fingers'. I'll reserve my judgment for Diablo Immortal until it's released though.
This is spot on. Creativity and passion, as you mentioned, are the aspects suffering the most. But thankfully, motivated indie developers are set on bringing it back into the industry.
I can list a lot of great games which are modern games, but I just have to look at my Steam or GOG account and see that it is chock full of old games which are amazing and love them to this day. So yeah, I'm more of a "everything was better in the past" guy.
most modern games lack content and depth. Some may consider them shallow. They are mostly focused on polishing the first 2 hours of gameplay to farm reviews, and the rest of the content is under budgeted or ignored. I know this firsthand as a game dev.
Yeah, the old classics can be considered "janky" by today's standards, but they offered more engaging in-depth content than most modern/popular games of today.
Reality is that the gamers of today share the blame in this for nitpicking every little thing and leaning towards instant gratification instead of fulfilling engagement. I might be labeled as a 'boomerdev' for saying this, but it has to be said lol
I voted both are good because there are good ones today too. But many of the big games today lack passion and creativity, which doesn't mean they can't be fun. But the fun usually comes through the multiplayer aspect and not so much through what the game devs/artists created.
I fell in love with gaming because I love to immerse in a world that someone else thoughtfully created and that feels somehow lived in. (also I don't want gaming to feel like work..)
Luckily we have the indie game devs still working on creating more of these experiences!
Got a new idea for another poll: Do you still use CDs or DVDs for games?
I personaly use CD's only tbh
Oh wow really? :D
practically digital only
same
1.44 FDD!
i think cds are better as you have it physically, and it could be like a collector kinda thing
i use cds like everytime
Honestly "nostalgia" games are just good because you remeber your childhood, if you didn't play it as a kid, then you'll probably think it's horrible.
But what if I play these games now and I think that they are awesome?

Both are good. There was great games back in the day, as there are today as well. The same works for bad games.

Great poll.
Amazing modern games!
Man Made Mafia is the best.
