most modern games lack content and depth. Some may consider them shallow. They are mostly focused on polishing the first 2 hours of gameplay to farm reviews, and the rest of the content is under budgeted or ignored. I know this firsthand as a game dev.
Yeah, the old classics can be considered "janky" by today's standards, but they offered more engaging in-depth content than most modern/popular games of today.
Reality is that the gamers of today share the blame in this for nitpicking every little thing and leaning towards instant gratification instead of fulfilling engagement. I might be labeled as a 'boomerdev' for saying this, but it has to be said lol
