The demo is available to download from itch.io Starsbetweenthestars.itch.io.

I'd be really grateful for any comments or dms with your thoughts on how much potential the project has and how the game stacks up against the following design pillars:

  • Exploration
  • Combat
  • Atmosphere
  • Dialogue, Characters are still evolving

Current features:

  • Demo scene is around 1 km 0.6 miles square
  • Provides around 1-2 hours of gameplay
  • Sword shield melee combat
  • Longbow ranged combat
  • Fireball spell ranged combat
  • Humanoid enemies
  • Quest system with several basic quests
  • Potion brewing
  • Shop system
  • A very raw stealth system

Exploring the woods

Other points:

  • UI is prototyped - I want to fully refine functionality before polishing the design
  • Multiple classes are/will be available - the demo starts with Warrior class
  • There are some cave systems to explore but are still a bit empty

Sorry to hear you're having issues - I'd recommend just using the app to download the game. You can get the app here: Itch.io

There should be a new build up now v43 - I just tried downloading the zip and it worked okay for me but I've seen antivirus cause issues when extracting the zip. I'd highly recommend just using the app in this case as it means you don't have to download the entire game every time to get the latest updates - hth

Actually I'm using Linux and test games in Wine/Proton, so typically Linux can open any archive file type, but I'll see if I can find another way.

I know you probably don't support Linux, but that is fine, I focus on Windows games in Linux.

Looks like Itch has a Linux application but I have a feeling it won't download a Windows-only game.

Ah okay, I see. It would be a shame if you couldn't get the demo running. Unity supports builds for Linux so I'll try and get one going. Leave it with me for now - but thanks again for your interest.

You don't have to do that for me. I know supporting Linux is a whole other "beast" to deal with. Specially if you don't use Linux. Wine & Proton do a really good job running Windows-based games & executables with DirectX 10/11/12 support.

Attempting to build an open-world RPG is a monumental undertaking even for a company with dozens to hundreds of employees. Seeing one of any significant scale born from the work of a single person is a project I could see taking decades to complete. You've certainly got moxie to even attempt it. I'll follow you on Itch to watch your progress. Good luck!

You make an interesting and valid point which, I think warrants an article in itself as to:

- why I think it’s achievable for a single dev
- the approach I’m taking
- the trade-offs involved
- Pragmatism and reality
