Retaliate is a retro inspired space shooter with a twist, you start with no ammo!

In the crowded genre of shoot 'em up games, it's rare to come across one that truly stands out. Enter "Retaliate," the latest offering from the indie developer Romans I XVI Gaming. Originally released on Roku, Retaliate has been re-imagined from the ground up, embodying the developer's ultimate vision. Now available on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox, Retaliate promises a fresh and exhilarating experience for both seasoned arcade enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

The Unique Twist

At first glance, Retaliate seems to follow the traditional blueprint of a 2D arcade space shooter. Players control a lone spacecraft, navigating through waves of enemy ships, dodging their relentless fire, and striving to survive. However, Retaliate introduces a game-changing twist: players must collect ammo from the bullets that enemies shoot.

Instead of starting with a full arsenal, players begin with limited ammunition. Instead you have to use your shield to destroy your enemies and absorb their weapons, then use your enemies' weapons to retaliate. This innovative mechanic transforms the usual shoot 'em up gameplay, adding layers of strategy and intensity.

Gameplay Mechanics

Retaliate challenges players to master both offensive and defensive skills. The game demands precise timing and quick reflexes as players dodge enemy projectiles while strategically collecting them. The collected ammo isn't just for basic shooting; it can be stored and used for powerful special attacks, adding another strategic element to the game.

Development Journey

Romans I XVI Gaming's journey with Retaliate began with its initial release on Roku. While the game received positive feedback for its innovative mechanics, the limited capabilities of the Roku platform left much to be desired. Undeterred, the developer set out to rebuild the game from scratch, ensuring that Retaliate would achieve its full potential.
