History

After seeing the "Nanban Byōbu" screens attributed to Naizen, the team felt inspired by the thousands of stories they could create using a single painting.

We assembled a diverse team of programmers, artists, and game designers to explore the details of the artwork. Our game designers provided insights into the historical context, explaining the significance of the Portuguese influence on Japanese culture. They highlighted key figures, events, and daily life scenes that we could incorporate into the game.

The narrative we came up with, was centered around Vasco, a Portuguese merchant seeking wealth and opportunity in Japan. Vasco’s journey was filled with danger and intrigue. His primary objective was to establish a successful business, but he faced numerous challenges, including pirates, rival merchants, and the delicate politics of trading with both the Japanese.

Creating "Rota: Kurofune" was a true passion project, blending history, art, and technology. Centered around a key moment in Japanese history and inspired by the Nanban Byōbu screens, we aimed to make a game that was both informative and captivating. This project showed how video games can effectively tell stories and teach history, making a memorable impact on everyone who played it.
