Gauntlet hit the arcades in 1985.
There was nothing like it previously.
You could readily learn to beat Gauntlet on one quarter
with the wizard or warrior. Elf and valkyrie were more of a challenge.
Until software revision 9. That screwed with the food
the game had on various levels. After that it pretty
much sucked.
Then Gauntlet II arcade came out - with the same lame food
problem.
I dont think arcade game designers realized the importance
of Ace players which attracted more players.
Make no mistake - the food cheater code was a blatant
attempt to suck more quarters. It just made the game suck.
When you saw someone beating the tar out of a game,
you wanted to do that. And you knew it was possible.
That lead to much quarter dropage.
Before Gauntlet II was released on the Amiga (the original
was not released) what could you do?
Play Garrison!
While second to Gauntlet, it had most of the elements.
Interestingly it blended some G2 elements.
It did improve some features. You could get more
"special" potions and keep building that trait.
In Gauntlet 1/2 once you got a special potion, thats all
the boost you got. Gauntlet 1/2 had 3 levels of
monsters and generators. In later levels of
Garrison, gen / monster level kept going up.
They also added the "Dwarf", similar to Warrior.
If you get a chance to play garrison, it has most
of the excitement of Gauntlet.
Garrison was a cool Gauntlet clone on the Amiga:
Mobygames.com
After the load screen...check that cool music.
