This is exactly why I stick away from P2W games which have a multiplayer component.

Somehow, the self-claimed title of "free to play" is misleading.

It's basically an eternal beta where players would keep paying real money for items that you can't use in Real-Life to satisfy the publishers' cash fountain.

it is literally "free to play", they let you download and play freely, BUT not the stuff.

Free to play
Pay to win

nothing misleading here. you can play for free, but you need to pay if you want to win.

What she stated is "Free to play" which is actually "Pay to Win" that why she said misleading.

Now, tell me at least one developer for example that truly call their game "pay to win". Majority of 'em claimed their product is free to play.

but really, nothing misleading there.
"free to play" means you don't need to spend any bucks to play the game. so technically they are not lying.

it's different matter if you want to win.
you might need to use paid stuffs in the game that greatly benefit you over the non-paying players. but that is not mandatory. you still can win without buying paid stuffs, but it's like eating dirt with spoon, your persistence is being tested here.

anyway if you don't like the system just quit playing the game. it's free anyway, you don't lose anything.
and it is those money the paying users spend that keep the game company running. without them the game servers might be shut down in anytime.

Yes, but what about when it comes to competitive gameplay?

In many online fps yes, given the default weapons, players still able to get the advantage even though some opponents are using paid stuff. Yes, but in some of mmorpg it won't always work.

My case was from few years ago, in one mmo (not Blizzard game) I used to play, at the few earlier patch they were good, quite competitive actually even though the publishers sold some stuff like exp potion, mega hp pot, or few special buff. PVP were quite okay. Got lots fun with that. The biggest feature of the game was recruitable characters among your journey and you can have 'em in battle in PVP which was quite awesome back then. Next few months later they introduced patch featuring char card (an upgraded version of the default recruitable characters with stronger/better skills/OP stat). And I realized then the pvp turned unbalanced and guess what? The fellow gamers started to leave the game one by one. Then in two years, the publisher decided to shut down the server. Quite ironic I guess, they claimed to be balanced game yet they (publisher or let's say third party thing) pushed their luck thus ended signing their own end.

Well I'm not about bitching about paid $$ stuff. Better the paid game with good online management and balanced stuff (no item mall included). Prime example of how well developed online game, Blizzard is on the top hands down, hate it or admit it.

In term of competitive online game, I agree the most with what ElfFriend stated.

well I'm still right about being free to play is technically not misleading.

if it's about competitiveness, think like it is a casino. you don't try to play with people that have much higher money pool than you. unless you're really confident with your skill, it's already like suicide. for those whales they do think they have competitive matches, it's just not on your league. meanwhile you still can play with people with similar stakes and play casually. this is what we call matchmaking.

in your case there, it is not about free to play being misleading or competitiveness issue. it's more like a poorly designed game. they keep and keep changing their gameplay mechanics just to attract new users with shiny new things without realizing the effects to the gameplay meta. these kind of games are not competitive at all.

there are still many F2P games that offer competitive gameplay, whenever as a non-paying or a whale. having paid stuffs in the game not necessarily making them a P2W game. you just had to avoid those badly designed games.
