What happened here was the Geist Lair enemies threw Alarm after the battle ended. And whenever you throw an attack, you can't do anything until Mimic Ball mimics it. The same applies for switching parties. Even if you first party is completely dead, it won't switch until Mimic Ball finishes mimicking.
