Here is a look at the base normal map using the Matballz shader.
I decided to show it by itself because the normal map is doing quite a lot to add interest to a very bland model shape.
From here you can actually use the 'height' map (which is used to generate the normal map) to start overlaying shade onto the base colours of the diffuse.
This will give you a very clear and detailed diffuse starting point.
Breaking up the diffuse base colours (so they are not a single flat value, there are a lot of different ways of doing this), will leave you with a reasonable diffuse texture (it would lack 'personality, but would not be poor quality).
